第十四篇--The paradox that stymies so many beginners...


Yes, the Audience is All-Important.
Yes the whole reason for doing theatre is to communicate something meaningful to them.

Actors are right to acknowledge that a theatrical event is a communal experience between performers and audience. But please do not allow this fact to dominate your consciousness while on stage. You can't tune into an audience's reaction and, at the same time, focus properly on your character's actions. Even if you could, you would not be able to count on the reaction as an accurate barometer of your performance's success. You may start preferring a giddy audience with shallow involvement in the story over a meditative audience that is more genuinely moved.
